Lijiang Old Town
丽江古城 · Lìjiāng Gǔchéng
A Naxi town of cobbles and canals under an 5,596-metre snow peak, with the last living pictographic script on earth.

Lijiang was the seat of the Naxi, a Tibeto-Burman people who ran an autonomous chieftaincy here for 500 years and developed something no other surviving culture has: Dongba, a pictographic writing system still readable by a handful of ritual specialists. The old town's plan is unusual too — no city wall, because the ruling Mu family's surname inside a box would spell the character for 'siege'. Instead, a canal system fed from Black Dragon Pool runs through every lane, and the streets follow the water.
A 7.0 earthquake in 1996 destroyed much of the modern town and left the old timber-frame buildings largely standing, which prompted both the UNESCO listing and a tourism boom that has thoroughly transformed the place. Today Dayan, the main old town, is a beautiful, cobbled, extremely commercial warren of guesthouses, bars and silver shops. Locals will tell you the Naxi have largely moved out.
Take that as information, not as a reason to skip it. Get up at 06:30 and the lanes are empty and stunning. Walk 15 minutes to Shuhe, a quieter old town on the same UNESCO listing, or 25 km to Baisha, where the Ming frescoes are and the tourism has barely arrived. And above all of it stands Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, 5,596 metres, which no one has ever successfully climbed.

Highlights
Dayan Old Town at dawn
Sifang Square, Wuyi Street, the canal lanes. From 06:30 to 08:30 you will have it almost to yourself, and it is magical.
Black Dragon Pool
A park north of town where the canals originate, with the classic reflection of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the water behind a moon bridge.
Baisha frescoes
25 km north: 15th-century murals mixing Tibetan, Naxi and Han Buddhist iconography in a village that tourism has mostly ignored.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Cable car to a 4,506 m glacier boardwalk — the highest in China you can reach without climbing. Oxygen sold at the base; take it seriously.
Shuhe Old Town
Quieter, greener and 15 minutes away — a better place to stay than Dayan if you want sleep.
Naxi Orchestra
Elderly musicians playing Tang and Song court music on instruments that went extinct elsewhere. Nightly in Dayan; genuinely unusual.

Getting there
Lijiang has an airport (1h from Kunming) and a rail link — the Lijiang–Shangri-La line opened in 2023, putting Shangri-La 80 minutes away. Kunming to Lijiang by rail is 3h30.
Tickets
The old town maintenance fee is ¥50, checked at some attractions. Black Dragon Pool ¥60. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain ¥100 park plus ¥120 cable car plus ¥20 bus, and slots must be booked ahead.
Opening hours
The old town is always open. Jade Dragon cable cars 07:00–16:00, capped daily.
Best time of day
Old town before 08:30 and after 22:00. Jade Dragon on the first clear morning you get.
What everyone gets wrong
- Stay in Shuhe or on the quiet northern edge of Dayan. The bar street runs loud until 02:00.
- Lijiang is at 2,400 m — noticeable but easy. Jade Dragon at 4,500 m is not; do not go on your arrival day.
- Book Jade Dragon cable car tickets in advance through your guesthouse; daily numbers are capped and it sells out.
- Baisha and Yuhu villages are where the Naxi countryside still is. Rent an e-bike and go.
- The old town is a maze with no signage worth the name. Download offline maps.

- Naxi baba — a thick fried flatbread, sweet or savoury, eaten for breakfast
- Yunnan wild mushrooms in season (June to September), especially matsutake
- Crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, Yunnan's signature dish, assembled at the table in boiling broth
