Southern China sits on one of the world's great karst platforms: rainwater has spent 200 million years dissolving limestone into conical peaks, sinkholes, caves and underground rivers. The result is the scenery on the back of the 20-yuan note — the Li River at Xingping — plus the terraced amphitheatres of Longji, the sinkholes of Leye and the boat-only gorges of Wuyuan and Xiaoqikong.
